External stairs in Holland Park

Holland Park sits on the south side's high ground, where the breeze is good and the stairs on a highset home earn their keep.

External timber stairs on a Brisbane home

What we do

Stairs you stop thinking about.

External stairs carry more weight than any other timber on a house, and they fail quietly. We replace and build them properly: rotten stringers out, new flights set out to code, treads fixed to be walked on for decades. Bernard Building is owner led, so Ben quotes every job himself, walks the site with you, and stays your contact from the first measure to the final handrail.

Post-war timber and brick homes on high ground catch the weather from every direction, and external stairs are the first timber to complain. Spongy treads, a rail that moves, hairline splits at the stringer housings: these are the early warnings. We replace failed flights with straight, code-set stairs in hardwood, and where a home is getting a deck or extension we build the stairs as part of that structure rather than an afterthought bolted on later.

  • Full stair replacements on rotten flights
  • New back stairs for highset homes
  • Steep-block access flights and landings
  • Hardwood treads and code-compliant handrails
  • Stairs tied into decks and verandahs

Straight answers

Before you call.

A proper stair starts long before the first cut. We measure the total rise, work out an even going, and set out stringers so every step lands the same underfoot. Posts are footed and fixed for the load, treads are gauged from seasoned hardwood, and handrails go on at a height you can trust. Then it all gets sealed against Brisbane weather.

How do I know my external stairs need replacing?

Push on the handrail and walk the treads. Movement in the rail, spring or softness underfoot, rust weeping from fixings, or rot where the stringers meet the ground are all warning signs. Timber stairs fail from the bottom up and from the fixings out, so if one tread has gone, the rest are usually not far behind.

Can my stairs be repaired, or do they need full replacement?

We tell you straight after we have looked at them. Isolated damage, like one split tread or a loose baluster, can often be repaired. But if the stringers are rotten or the set-out no longer meets code, patching wastes your money, and we will say so. Ben quotes both paths where both are honest options.

Which areas do you cover?

We build external stairs across 36 Brisbane suburbs. Most of our work is on the north side around The Gap, Ashgrove, Bardon and Kedron, but Ben quotes jobs from the inner city out to the southern suburbs. If you are unsure whether we cover your street, call and ask.
