Home renovations in Red Hill

Red Hill's tin-and-timber cottages cling to some of Brisbane's steepest streets, so renovations here start with structure and stumps.

Renovation carpentry inside a Brisbane home

What we do

Renovations, run by the builder.

Renovation carpentry is the middle of our trade at Bernard Building. Structural work first: new beams and openings, walls out, verandahs and decks tied into the house properly. Then the finishing carpentry that makes the new work read as part of the original home. We are owner led. Ben quotes every renovation himself, works on the tools with the crew, and is the same bloke you call when something needs deciding.

A cottage on a Red Hill slope has usually spent a century quietly moving, so before any plan gets opened up we look at what it stands on: stumps, bearers, joists, and the bracing a steep block demands. From there the renovation can be ambitious, with rooms built in under the high side, decks stepped off the contour, and the tin-and-timber character kept intact above it all. Small houses, steep ground, careful carpentry.

  • Opening up closed post-war floor plans
  • Verandahs, decks and outdoor rooms
  • New beams, openings and wall removals
  • VJ walls and character detail kept
  • Timber extensions and staged renovations

Straight answers

Before you call.

Before we start, you get a written scope that says what is being done and in what order. Renovations run in stages, so we plan around the ones that make dust and noise, keep the site tidy at the end of each day, and keep you across anything we find once the walls are open. One point of contact, no surprises.

Do you do structural work?

Yes. Structural carpentry is the core of our renovation work: beams, load-bearing wall removals, new openings, subfloor and framing repairs. We are QBCC licensed (15357497) and we work to the engineering, not around it. Where an engineer or certifier is needed, we coordinate that as part of the job.

Can we live in the house during the renovation?

Usually, yes. Most of our renovations are staged so the household keeps a working kitchen and bathroom for as long as possible. We are upfront about the noisy, dusty stretches and we leave the site tidy and safe at the end of every day. If a stage would make the house unliveable, we tell you before it starts.

Which areas do you renovate in?

We work across 36 Brisbane suburbs, from the inner north-west out to the east and south sides. The Gap, Ashgrove, Bardon and Kedron are our home turf, but Ben quotes renovations anywhere on our list. If you are nearby and not sure, call and ask.
